Queen of the South chairman Billy Hewitson talks down rumours he is to step down

Queen of the South chairman Billy Hewitson has addressed rumours that he’s set to leave Palmerston.

There has been speculation the club supremo is due to step down from the Championship club but he has moved to play them down this week.

Billy joked: “As far as I know I’m not stepping down.”

He added: “I don’t know where this stuff comes from. Someone was on to me the other day about the rumours too so I have heard about them.”

Hewitson, who took over from David Rae, says he has been planning for the future with fellow directors Craig Paterson and Mark Blount but insists that nothing is imminent.

No notice for an AGM, which is normally around this time of year, has added fuel to the fire.

Hewitson said: “The directors and myself have been working on succession planning in the last few months.

“That’s something we’re actively looking at because it would be wrong if we didn’t.

“We’ve been looking at succession planning but that is normal business practice. That’s probably where the rumours come from.

“We want to make the club sustainable and we’re getting there.

“We need to know when we’re ready to go there’s people ready to step in. It would need to be the right thing for the club. It’s all about what’s best for the club. It has to be the right plan. This is a business and a football club.

“There’s a 21-day notice for an AGM and there hasn’t been one yet so it will probably be towards the end of February.”
