Queen and Prince Philip get Covid-19 vaccine

The Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, have been given the Covid-19 vaccine today, Buckingham Palace says.

In an unusual move Buckingham Palace, which rarely comments on the private health matters of the monarch and duke, announced the 94-year-old head of state and her consort had been given the injection.

It is understood the Queen decided the information should be made public to prevent inaccuracies and further speculation.

The Queen, 94, and Prince Phillip, 99, are among around 1.5 million people in the UK to have had at least one dose of a Covid vaccine so far.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: "The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have today received Covid-19 vaccinations."

Royal aides have previously said it was a "personal decision" and "private matter" but it was widely understood that the Queen would would "let it be known" when she received the vaccine.

A royal source confirmed the injections were administered by a royal household doctor at Windsor Castle.

The Queen and Philip have been spending the lockdown in England sheltering at their Windsor Castle home after deciding to have a quiet Christmas at their Berkshire residence, and forgo the traditional royal family gathering at Sandringham.

Prince Charles, 72, said he will also be getting the vaccine (PA)

Prince Charles, 72, has also confirmed in recent weeks that he will have the vaccine but said he would "wait my turn."

On January 8, a third vaccine to treat coronavirus was approved in the UK.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has approved the Moderna coronavirus vaccine, the Department for Health has announced.

The UK had ordered seven million doses of the jab - which is 94 per cent effective - and has now ordered another 10 million.

The Moderna vaccine will be used across the UK alongside the Pfizer and Oxford vaccines which are already being administered.

Buckingham Palace did not confirm whether the royal couple have had Pfizer or Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccine.
