Quack-thinking teenagers applauded by police for saving a duck

A group of teenagers from Bolton have been commended by police officers after stepping in to help a duck that was being attacked with stones.

On Monday (July 19), GMP Bolton reported that ten students from Rivington and Blackrod High School in Bolton had received a Chief Superintendents Commendation for their act of kindness.

In June, the year 11 students had been visiting High Rid Reservoir when they noticed a teenager was attacking a duck with stones.

As a result, the duck was struck in the eye and had been struggling to remain afloat.

The students managed to rescue the duck and were able to get assistance from youth workers who were nearby in the area at the same time.

The duck later received veterinary care and was able to recover from the injuries.

On Monday, nine of the students were greeted by a visit from Inspector David Johnston, Neighbourhood Inspector for Bolton West, who applauded them for their act of kindness.

"Young people often get bad press when the majority are good citizens,” Inspector Johnston said via the GMP Bolton Facebook page.

“It was really nice to be able to recognise this particular group who represent the next generation of people who will do the right thing.

“They have all finished year 11 and are looking forward to their school prom.

“I am sure that they all have a bright future ahead of them and I wish them the very best!"
