What have the arts got against the definite article? Once upon a time we had the Arts Council of England, the Tate, the South Bank Centre and the Wigmore Hall. Now each of the institutions has mysteriously misplaced its "the", a sacrifice to the wrathful gods of branding, and we are required to talk about Tate, Wigmore Hall, Southbank Centre and Arts Council England (with its bonus lost preposition). The final mislaid definite article comes in what I shall continue to call THE Turner prize exhibition at Tate Britain, where a sign tells us what is being displayed "for Turner prize". Please God let it be a typo, not the shape of things to come.
