Putin’s Starlink-style network sparks alarm in Ukraine

  • Russia is rapidly accelerating the deployment of its Rassvet satellite internet network to rival SpaceX's Starlink, according to Ukrainian military intelligence.
  • Developed by aerospace company Bureau 1440, Rassvet currently has 16 active satellites, with plans to expand to 292 by 2027 and 924 by 2035.
  • Starlink remains a key advantage for Ukraine's drone operations and communications after Kyiv successfully lobbied SpaceX to disable grey-market terminals used by Russian forces.
  • Major General Vadym Skibitskyi noted that Rassvet currently operates only intermittently over Ukraine, but a complete constellation would function similarly to Starlink.
  • Ukrainian officials are already developing strategies to counter the Russian satellite network once it achieves full operational capacity.
