Punjab: Navjot Singh Sidhu backs ‘Rail Roko’ by farmers, hits out at AAP

AMRITSAR: Announcing to extend support to the farmers in their April 25 Rail Roko agitation, former president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Navjot Singh Sidhu blamed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for allegedly deceiving the farmers and making false promises to the common people of Punjab to win elections.

Sidhu on Sunday visited the Jandiala grain market, where he met farmers and listened to their issues.

Later talking to the media, Sidhu said that on Friday, he had visited the Machhiwara grain market and came to know from farmers that this year crop yield had come down owing to various climatic reasons, including a severe heatwave resulting in shriveling of the grain. “The yield has dropped from 20% to 50% and the farmers had asked me to raise their voice for adequate compensation,” said Sidhu.

He said a group of farmers, including union leaders, met him on Sunday and said that 500 to 600 acres of crops were gutted in fire and there had been crop losses of 20 % to 50%.

“Kejriwal remains in election mode, from 2015 to 2021 he never thought of farmers but during Punjab elections, he announced to give a compensation of Rs 50,000 per hectare in case of crop damage, now when he has won election in Punjab, he is not much concerned about Punjab,” alleged Sidhu while adding that, “They (Delhiwala’s ) think that Punjab is a launching pad for Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat.”

He said he would extend support to April 25 Rail Roko agitation announced by the farmers. Reacting to the AAP government’s announcement in Punjab to start giving 300 units of free electricity from July, Sidhu questioned why there was a delay in supplying free electricity.
