Punjab: Heavy rains wreak havoc in low-lying fields of Muktsar

BATHINDA: Due to heavy rains in the region for the last two days, fields in Attari village of Muktsar, which are on the low-lying side, have been completely inundated. The rain water has also entered the fields at nearby villages, Gulabewala and Fattanwala,m while Raniwala village too has been inundated. The paddy and cotton crop over hundreds of acres are on the verge of getting damaged. The villagers are demanding compensation for the loss.

After the heavy rains on Friday, water from nearby villages started accumulating in the low-lying fields in Attari village. By Sunday morning, the entire village was inundated and the farmers assembled at the bridge in the village and made frantic calls to district administrative officials. By Sunday afternoon, Muktsar deputy commissioner Vineet Kumar with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Jagdeep Singh Brar reached the village to take stock of the situation. “Our crops are damaged. The water does not seem to recede, as all the drains are overflowing. The farmers at other villages are guarding to ensure the roads are not cut to send the water to other side,” said Attari resident Karnail Singh.
