Punjab Congress slams AAP govt for its failure to meet labourers' demands

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Congress slammed the Bhagwant Mann-led government for its indifferent approach towards the genuine demands of the landless and farm labourers in the state.

The major demands include an amendment to the law to solve the problem of reserved lands from village panchayat lands, ensuring 33% representation for Dalits in village cooperative societies and cancellation of FIRs registered against protesting labourers.

Senior Congress leader and leader of opposition Partap Singh Bajwa on Thursday said the landless and farm labourers are getting fed up with the hollow promises of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and have announced to stage a protest outside CM’s residence in Sangrur on November 30.

Bajwa said the AAP government in Punjab grabbed power on the pretext of providing the Dalit community and farm labourers their rights. “Isn’t it a disrespect to Dr B R Ambedkar, on whose name AAP befooled the people of Punjab to seek votes during assembly elections as it has now failed to fulfil the genuine demands of the labourers,” said Bajwa

He also expressed disappointment over the Dalit labourer’s allegations that their repeated meetings with government representatives have failed to yield any positive result for the Dalits of Punjab as the leaders and officers are not taking our demands seriously. “Similarly, the AAP government made several commitments with the farmers, however, the farmers ended up staging a series of agitations and fasting unto death due to the apathy of the AAP government,” Bajwa added.

Bajwa said the AAP government in its eight-month tenure has failed all sections of the society, including labourers, farmers, contractual employees and teachers. Meanwhile, left with no other choice, these people have taken to the streets, he added.
