Punjab: Biggest ever drone shot down by BSF, two in a night

AMRITSAR: There were several firsts for the Border Security Force (BSF) in Punjab Frontier on Monday night. Not only the two women constables of BSF shot down a Pak drone, but for the first time two enemy drones were brought down in a single night, and for the time BSF shot down over 7 feet wide drone carrying 6.5 kg heroine.

Giving details, BSF Inspector General (IG), Punjab Frontier, Asif Jalal informed that two women constables namely Preeti and Bhagyashree who were posted on duty at Border out Post (BoP) Dariya Mansoor which falls under 73rd Battalion of BSF in Amritsar district heard the buzzing sound of drone intrusion on November 28 following which they opened fire at the drone with their Insas rifle. “The bullet hit at one of the Pak drones' wings and it lost balance and fell down about fifty meters from the border fence,” he said. BSF recovered around 3 kg of heroin following the search of the area.

Sources informed that the Pak drone was flown from the area of the Pak Rangers Taimur Shaheed post.

Asif said this was the biggest drone weighing 19 kg and 7 feet in width which they had shot down.

In another incident, BSF troops spotted Pak’s unidentified flying machine near Harbhajan BoP in Tarn Taran district on the intervening night of November 28 and 29. “The troops fired towards the direction of the Pak drone and during a search operation the Pak drone was recovered on Tuesday morning behind Harbhajan BoP”, said Asif adding that BSF had also recovered a consignment of 6.23 kg heroine.

Deputy Inspector General, BSF, Gurdaspur sector Prabhakar Joshi informed that movement of another Pak drone was spotted near BSF’s Vadai Cheema BOP where the BSF troops fired towards its direction following which it receded.

Prabhakar said to motivate the women constables, he honoured them with cash reward on the spot for displaying alertness.
