PUNE: A havildar of the State Reserve Police Force headquarters, Group II, was arrested on Saturday, a day after his car hit an elderly couple out on a morning walk near Alankar lawns, killing the woman and seriously injuring her husband.

Havildar Popat Madane (40) was arrested after he surrendered at the Wanowrie police station and his car was seized.

The Wanowrie police registered a case of negligence causing death and injury against him after the couple’s son, Pankajsing Negi (32), lodged a complaint.

The police identified the deceased as homemaker Vishambari Negi (60), from Tatya Tope housing society on Shivarkar Road in Wanowrie. Her husband, Narendrasingh Negi (63), got eight stitches to his head. Negi is a retired petty officer (noncommissioned officer) from the Indian Navy.

Sub-inspector Santosh Gaikwad said, “Madane is posted as a driver in the motor transport department of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), Group II. He was speeding to Camp in his car on Friday morning. He lost control over the vehicle and it hit the elderly couple around 6. 30am. ”

Gaikwad said, “Madane and SRPF policemen rushed the injured couple to the Command Hospital. A critically injured Vishambari was declared dead on arrival. She succumbed to head injury. Narendrasingh was discharged from the hospital after treatment. His condition is reported to be stable. ”

The complainant, Pankajsing, a doctor, told TOI, “When I met Madane, I found that he was feeling drowsy. He told me that he had come from a far-off place. ”
