PUNE: Gold and silver ornaments totally worth Rs 7.93 lakhs, kept in a 'Dhanteras Pooja' were stolen from a bungalow at Pune Vidyapeeth colony in Warje Malwadi on the night intervening Sunday and Monday.
“The family members had gone to sleep after the Pooja rituals, keeping the kitchen door at the rear end of the bungalow open. The culprit(s) walked in through this door to collect the valuables,” said sub inspector Rameshwar Parve from Warje Malwadi police on Monday.
Parve said, “Income Tax expert Gaurang Honrao (34) and his family members had removed gold and silver ornaments from the cupboard and kept in `Dhanteras Pooja’ but they did not collect the ornaments and forgot to keep it in cupboard and went to sleep after 11pm.”
He said, “An unknown person walked into the bungalow on finding the rear side kitchen door open, stole the ornaments and decamped with the booty from the same place. The theft came to light after the family members found the ornaments stolen. They later reported the incident to police.”
Senior inspector Dagdu Hake said, “We suspect the involvement of a known person behind the theft. We are working on certain clues and we hope to detect the case at the earliest.”
When contacted, Honrao said, “There are no CCTV cameras and security guards in the Vidyapeeth colony. The theft took place because the kitchen door was not closed.”
