Pundit tips Sunderland to suffer blow in the race for automatic promotion this weekend

Sunderland will lose ground in the race for automatic promotion from League One this weekend.

That is according to former Coventry City midfielder David Prutton who feels his former side will beat the Black Cats in Sunday's crunch clash at the top of the division.

Prutton is one of Sky Sports' leading EFL pundits and was asked to predict the outcome of the game ahead of their live coverage from Birmingham's St Andrew's stadium.

Phil Parkinson's side head to the second city having lost just one of their last 15 games and are currently three points adrift of the Sky Blues in second place.

If Wycombe fail to win at Doncaster and Sunderland beat the Sky Blues, the Black Cats will move into the automatic promotion places.

However, defeat to Mark Robins' side could see them fall six points adrift in the race for automatic promotion and as low as sixth in the League One table.

The stakes couldn't be higher but Prutton feels Sunderland will taste disappointment as opposed to joy, backing them to lose 2-1 to the Sky Blues.

"Coventry's winning run came to an end in midweek, but they will still have been content with a point against League One leaders Rotherham," Prutton told Sky Sports.

"Sunderland snuck a late point on Tuesday night, and they will have their eyes on Coventry on Saturday, knowing a win could potentially send them into the top two. This could go either way, but I'll back a narrow home win."
