Pubs, gyms, restaurants and cinemas in London to be ordered to shut

The Prime Minister is to order pubs, gyms, leisure centres, and restaurants in London to close in order to stop the spread of coronavirus, according to reports.

The plan is being discussed at a meeting this afternoon and will be announced at 5pm, according to The Independent.

London has 16 per cent of the country's population - but now has seen 40 per cent of the cases of coronavirus.

That is up from 25 per cent just days ago, showing the virus is spreading more rapidly in the capital.

The Independent says Boris Johnson chaired a meeting this morning where it was discussed that people in London are ignoring the social distancing advice issued on Monday.

Wetherspoon today said it would not be closing its pubs voluntarily, with chairman Tim Martin saying few people had caught Covid-19 in a pub.

After a meeting this afternoon the move, if given final approval, will be announced at the daily briefing at 5pm.
