Pubs and bars in East Kilbride raise a glass as they welcome customers inside once again

The easing of lockdown saw pubs and bars in the greater East Kilbride area open their doors and welcome customers inside once again.

Phase 3 allowed for the reopening of indoor venues including public houses, as well as restaurants.

Previously only businesses with beer gardens or outdoor seating areas could operate.

The Village Inn opened its doors for the first time in nearly four months welcoming customers old and new.

Landlord Paul Jardine told the East Kilbride News: “It was great to see customers back again and that they felt safe with the measures we have in place.

“We are following all the government guidelines but that means we have taken a hit financially as the number of customers has to be significantly lower.

“But it’s a start and it would be gutting after all the hard work and preparation put in to reopening for the virus to take off again. That would devastate the industry.

“I have to say the support from Belhaven and Greene King for ourselves has been absolutely fantastic – we wouldn’t have got through it without them.”

However, the pub’s thriving music scene has taken a hit.

Paul added: “The bands and music is what we are known for and we are taking a hammering on that front.

“All that has stopped for now – we could have more than 300 folk in the pub at weekends for the music before this.

“And I feel for the musicians too, they have taken a hit in all this.”

Manager, Alan MacKenzie, said: “We were delighted to welcome customers and these last few months have been among the toughest we have faced.

“Having the beer garden was a big help and we have measures in place inside including screens around every bar area, allocated ordering points, no standing allowed and our staff wearing gloves.

“To be fair everyone has been understanding and we have had no trouble at all. I think all our customers appreciate that it is just the way things have to be for now.”

Colin MacIver, entertainment and pr manager said: “The past few months have taken there toll on a lot of businesses in East Kilbride and we are no different.

“But it was great to welcome everyone back and being open inside now as well is a big help.

“We have put measures in place and the one metre distancing makes things a lot easier for us. There are markers in the floor, a booking system in place and table service only. We have had a good run since the beer garden and it’s still proving successful.”
