Program on EKU campus combines housing and workforce training for single parent students

Federal, state, and local government officials along with Eastern Kentucky University leaders Wednesday celebrated the Workforce Pathway at Kit Carson Commons Scholar House. The 30-unit housing facility sits on the Richmond campus. Workforce development programming is also offered to single-parent students. Dominique Kellam and her children live in a three-bedroom unit.

“It provides a community for me and my children and also a strong foundation for stability to attain higher education,” said Kellam.

Another scholar, Tallia Cuttino spoke during the formal ceremony at Kit Carson Commons. She said she connected with the Center for Student Parents. Cuttino said the program offers everything one needs, academically, financially, and emotionally.

Maliyah Christopher and her boys, ages four and two reside at Kit Carson Commons. She hopes her sons get a glimpse of her postsecondary successes.

“It just represents higher education and I want them to look at me and to admire what I’ve done and maybe it will motivate them,” said Christopher.

The Workforce Pathway at Kit Carson Commons Scholar House provides affordable housing and support services. The program prioritizes single-parent students and single-parent military service members and veterans.
