Professor Luke O’Neill urged Electric Picnic punters not to be 'frightened' as he prepares to rock out with his band at festival

Professor Luke O’Neill has urged Electric Picnic punters not to be frightened ahead of the weekend as he prepares to rock out with his band.

The immunologist, who became one of the most well-known faces in Ireland throughout the pandemic is a “regular” to the Stradbally.

Serving up drinks behind the bar at the new and improved Freetown area yesterday, he told the Irish Mirror: “As you can see. I’m so excited to be coming to EP. I’m a regular.

“It’s brilliant, you know, to be back out and enjoying ourselves and it’s important. And the great news is there is a wall of immunity built in our community so there is no need to be frightened. It is a great time to celebrate, really.

“And I can’t wait to get out. I was saying they should have run EP last year, and it is so important for mental health isn’t it and young people especially were locked up for so long and I said have it last year and they didn’t. But now we are back and it is tremendous. It is almost like a human right I think for people to gather and have a good time.

“And with music and a bit of science thrown in.”

As well as promoting science throughout the weekend, the professor of biochemistry at Trinity College Dublin will be performing with his band, The Metabollix.

The singer and guitar player said: “So my band are playing on Friday and Saturday in the aul fellas tent, which is great fun.

"I sing and play guitar."

He said the band is made up of doctors and scientists, saying: "There's nine of us in the band. Three doctors, two scientists, two singing so we're all here to have a bit of fun. It's our hobby."

“And then on Saturday we are at the Science Foundation Ireland tents, there’s a lot of science happening here at the weekend.”
