
Freshly dyed tenugui hand towels hang out to dry at the Osaka workshop of Nakani Co. in Naka Ward, Sakai. With summer around the corner, craftsmen have been working up a sweat to keep up with demand for their colorful textiles, which garnered attention as makeshift face coverings during the mask shortages. Hand-dyed in the local "chusen" technique, the company has begun selling a shorter version of their tenugui this year for versatile use as handkerchiefs and even wall decorations. A company spokesperson said, "We hope our tenugui can give a little brightness amid the pandemic."
