Probe into Tas Labor allegations nears end

An investigation into sexual harassment allegations levelled at Tasmania's short-lived Labor opposition leader is expected to soon be finalised.

David O'Byrne resigned from the role in early July - mere weeks after being appointed to the position following the party's third straight election loss - after the accusations came to light.

He was accused of sending inappropriate texts to a junior employee and kissing her without consent in 2007 and 2008, when he worked for the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union.

The woman, a long-time Labor member, recently told the ABC the party's complaints process was traumatising and there was a lack of support.

State Labor leader Rebecca White held her first press conference on Monday since announcing her return to the role after Mr O'Byrne's departure.

She took maternity leave for the birth of her second child after leading the party to the May 1 election defeat.

Ms White said it was premature to pre-empt the findings of the investigation when asked if Mr O'Byrne's position in parliament was tenable.

The 52-year-old, who represents the southern electorate of Franklin, was elected in 2018 and also served as an MP from 2010-14.

"There is an investigation that is independent of me that is currently underway," Ms White told reporters.

"That continues to do its job and I'm sure there'll be a report handed down very soon."

She said Labor's state secretary would make a public statement once the investigation was finalised.

Mr O'Byrne has previously issued a public apology over the allegations, saying he thought the interactions were consensual at the time but now understood they were not.
