A probation officer was racially abused by a man she was trying to help, a court heard.
Mark Evitt, 55, was meeting with the female officer to try and arrange accommodation for him.
He had made himself 'intentionally homeless' after threatening people in the property he had previously lived in, Manchester Crown Court heard.
But as the officer made enquiries to try and help him, Evitt, from Newton Heath, launched into a vile racist tirade towards her, prosecutor Nigel Booth said.
He said: "You're probation, you are supposed to help me. You f****** black c***."
The officer was said to be shocked following the incident, which happened in April last year.
In a statement read to the court, she said: "That's not the sort of conduct that anybody should expect to put up with in this sort of job."
Evitt's barrister Julian Goode said the defendant accepts his conduct was 'deplorable'.
Evitt pleaded guilty to an offence of racially aggravated harassment.
He was also in court for another incident, after admitting a communications offence.
Evitt sent a message to the daughter of his former partner in December 2017, which read: "You think you are smart. I know what's going on."
He said there was a 'surprise coming your way', adding: "You are all getting destroyed, believe me."
Sentencing, Judge Anthony Cross QC said that Evitt had a 'bad' criminal record, but noted that he has stayed out of trouble after committing these offences.
He added that Evitt's offending was 'slowing down' as the defendant got older.
Judge Cross told Evitt: "The first offence was bad, the second offence (against the probation officer) was disgusting.
"It's just disgusting conduct. The probation officer was trying to help you.
"You should be ashamed of yourself."
"I am sir," replied Evitt.
"Well you should be," the judge continued.
"I am not having public servants dealt with in this way. You need help with your anger management."
Evitt, of Windsor Road, Newton Heath, was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for 12 months.
He must also complete 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days.
