A prisoner has been charged with the murder of a fellow inmate at a jail in south-east London.

Roland Viarode, 22, is accused of killing Quang Nguyen behind bars at HMP Thameside, a category B prison in Greenwich.

Viarode was due to face a murder charge for the first time at a hearing at Bromley magistrates court on Thursday morning.

Scotland Yard said officers were called to the prison at just after midday on Tuesday, after “reports of an unresponsive male” and suspicions of an “altercation” the night before.

“London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance medics attended, but despite their efforts the 29-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:39hrs”, the force said.

“A post-mortem examination will be conducted in due course. “Enquiries are underway to notify next of kin. Formal identification awaits.

“A murder investigation has been launched led by Detective Chief Inspector Chris Wood.”

According to the charge, it is said: “On 07/02/2023 at HMP Thameside, Thamesmead in the Borough of Greenwich, (he) murdered Quang Nguyen.”

The charge was expected to be sent up to the Crown Court at Thursday’s hearing.

The Ministry of Justice and Serco, the private security firm which operates HMP Thameside, declined to comment on the incident.
