Princess Eugenie's 'key role' in bringing 'dear' Meghan and Harry back into royal fold

Princess Eugenie is perhaps the only person who can bring her "favourite cousin" Harry and wife Meghan Markle back into the royal fold, experts claim.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very much on the fringes of the Firm after stepping down as senior royals last year before making a series of damaging public allegations.

But with the Queen set to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee next summer it remains up in the air as to whether they will be part of the festivities.

And while the Sussexes' ties to many within the Palace may have worn considerably thin, Eugenie's relationship with them appears to be as strong as ever.

She wished her "dear" Meghan a happy 40th birthday this week on social media, after being hand-picked by the duchess to be among those in her 40x40 initiative.

The two women were friends prior to the former Hollywood star meeting Harry in 2016 - while the prince and princess have been close since childhood.

The Duke even chose to isolate at Frogmore Cottage on his return to the UK for the Diana statue unveiling in July.

In doing so he had to form a bubble with Eugenie, husband Jack Brooksbank and their five-month-old son August.

Meghan and Harry had been gifted the property within the grounds of Windsor Castle by the Queen after they got married - before allowing Eugenie and co to move in when they moved to the US.

Columnist Eleanor Steafel described Eugenie as "the peacemaker" who could well aid the pair in joining the family on Buckingham Palace balcony in under a year.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph today, she said: "The Sussexes may be settling into life as a foursome across the pond, but they are sure to have one eye on the family engagements that will draw them back to Britain next year.

"The Queen will celebrate her Platinum Jubilee in the summer, with events planned around the country. If Harry and his family are to be part of the celebrations, perhaps after a turbulent few months, Eugenie the peacemaker can help bring her favourite cousin back into the fold."

While royal author Nigel Cawthorne believes the princess could act as a "neutral go between" and "with absolute discretion pass on messages that aren't heard by courtiers at large".

But the writer behind 2020's Prince Andrew: Epstein and the Palace - about Eugenie's dad - admitted to the Daily Mail it will difficult for the Sussexes to return.

"At this moment in time, it is hard to see how anyone could bring Harry and Meghan back into the fold," he explained.

He said the Duke of York has a similar rivalry with his older brother Prince Charles as Harry shares with William, but he has always known "where the red lines are".

"He was careful never publicly to say anything that fuelled that rivalry or to leave his role," continued Mr Cawthorne.

" Prince Harry not only decided to leave both the firm and Britain, but also to give public interviews that are suggestive. In order for Harry, let alone Meghan, to return to the fold a very long time of rebuilding trust would be required," he added.
