Prince Harry's dwindling inner circle - and former close pals who have been cut out

Having once shared a close-knit group of friends with his brother, Prince Harry's inner circle has drastically changed in recent times.

The princes grew up surrounded by the same group of pals, many of whom have gone on to become their children's godparents.

A number of factors have contributed to Harry losing old friends and gaining new ones, such as moving to California with Meghan Markle and relations being at an all time low with Prince William.

Some of their pals may have been forced to take sides, while some appear to be wanting relationships with both brothers.

It was recently reported that Harry now 'only has six pals in Britain' and his small circle are unwilling to challenge the royal when he makes 'bad decisions'.

Here is a look of some of Harry's closest pals - and others who have seemingly been frozen out.

Tom 'Skippy' Inskip

Tom Inskip, known by the nickname Skippy, has been friends with Harry since childhood.

His father, Own Inskip, is a pal of King Charles and field-master of his favourite hunt, The Beaufort.

Skippy is one of Harry's oldest friends as they met while classmates at Eton - and he was a regular at the 'nightclub' the princes set up in the basement at Highgrove.

Tom has been with the duke during a number of scandals, including when Harry was seen inhaling 'hippy crack' at a party in 2010 and when the prince was photographed naked during a game of 'strip billiards' in Las Vegas in 2012.

Harry and then-girlfriend Meghan were guests at Tom's wedding to Hon Lara Hughes-Young in 2017 before their romance was officially confirmed.

However, the childhood pals reportedly had a big falling out when Skippy questioned the suitability of Meghan as a future royal.

According to the 2020 book Finding Freedom, Tom expressed doubts about how quickly the relationship was moving and told Harry he should live with Meghan before "doing anything more serious".

Authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand wrote that although Tom's advice "came from a good place", Harry "didn't totally see it that way".

As a result of the falling out, it was claimed Skippy and wife Lara were 'punished' by being excluded from Harry and Meghan's evening wedding party at Frogmore House.

But the pair reportedly reconciled, burying the hatchet when Tom's mother-in-law died and due to a phone call after Prince Archie was born.

Guy Pelly

Guy Pelly, known to be the 'court jester' of Harry and William's friends, is a bit of a party animal within the royal circle.

His mum Lady Carolyn Herbert was close friends with the late Princess Diana and he's known as a 'London aristocrat'.

He's been close with the princes since childhood and was with Harry for the infamous shameful Nazi costume party incident, by his side while dressed as the late Queen.

Having been dubbed by some a the 'third brother', Guy organised William's stag do and both royals attended his own wedding.

Despite tensions in the family, Guy has remained close to the Sussexes and visited the couple in California, alongside his wife, Elizabeth Wilson and their daughter.

"They were kindly invited by Harry and Meghan," a source told Richard Eden at the time. "Despite what's been said about Harry losing touch with his old friends, he was keen to see Guy."

Guy is also still close with William as he's one of Prince Louis' godparents.

Charlie van Straubenzee

Charlie is one of three brothers who became friends with William and Harry at an early age.

The van Straubenzee boys were classmates of the young princes at Ludgrove School - and have remained close friends into their adult years.

Tragically, Henry passed away in car accident in December 2002 at the age of just 18, as a passenger in the car that drove into a tree when leaving a party near Ludgrove.

Harry says hearing that his best mate had died "just like mummy" took him back to the night King Charles told him that Princess Diana had lost her life.

Youngest brother Charlie is another childhood friend of the princes - and shared a reputation with Harry as being a 'perpetual bachelor'.

He reportedly chose Harry to be best man at his wedding to Daisy Jenks in August 2018, with the Duke of Sussex returning the favour when he got married to Meghan.

According to reports, Charlie gave an incredible speech at the evening reception at Frogmore House.

He cheekily made fun of Harry's role as dormitory monitor during their school days, saying the young prince stole his teddy bear and chucked it on the roof.

Thomas van Straubenzee

Eldest brother Thomas has been close with both Harry and William since their school days - but is closer to the latter.

Thomas, who was the same age as William when they attended Ludgrove School, accompanied the future king on his royal tour to New Zealand in 2005.

In 2011, Harry quickly drove to help his pal after hearing him being mugged for his Blackberry while they chatted on the phone.

Harry, just back from US helicopter training, searched for him until intuition took him to the local police station, where he gave a statement.

Thomas is one of Princess Charlotte's five godparents and actually married the assistant headteacher at her school.

One of the biggest bombshells dropped by Harry in his book Spare is the claim that he wasn't best man at William's wedding.

Harry was officially classed as William's best man at his wedding to Kate in 2011 and even travelled with the future King to Westminster Abbey in a Bentley.

But in an astonishing declaration, he claimed it was a "bare-faced lie" and it was actually two of his brother's close friends, James Meade and Thomas Van Straubenzee.

Harry says he was demoted to act as a mere compere and introduce the pair, who gave the traditional speech at the reception.

If sides have been taken, you'd imagine Thomas would be closer to William than Harry.

Nacho Figueras

Nacho Figueras is one of Harry's best friends in California - and they are both part of the Los Padres Polo team.

The Argentinian has been a model for Ralph Lauren and in 2009 earned the title of the second most handsome man in the world in a poll by the magazine Vanity Fair.

Nacho, who has been dubbed the David Beckham of polo, truck up his long-standing friendship with Harry due to the sport.

It came when the prince set up his charity Sentebale, which helps those affected by HIV, and Nacho became an ambassador for the cause.

Nacho and wife Delfina went to the Sussexes wedding in 2018 and met Archie just weeks after he was born.

In a 2019 interview with Ellen DeGeneres, he asked him about his friendship with Harry and the scrutiny he and Meghan came under during their time as royals.

Talking of Harry, he said: "He is a wonderful man, someone who really cares. He's really committed. He really cares about children, and he cares about making the world a better place."

Marko

Mark Dyer, known by the nickname Marko, was a royal aide and trusted protector of Prince.

Harry looked up to Marko as a mentor and respected him for being "an extreme ginger and owning it".

Seen by the young prince as a 'second dad', he regularly pops up in stories during Harry's teenage years in memoir Spare.

King Charles tasked the aide with looking after his youngest son - with Marko taking Harry to Botswana when he was a boy.

The royal household sent Marko to give Harry a telling off when he was drug-taking at Eton - and the prince hilariously revealed the story of how he lost his virginity to an older woman in a field to him.

According to Penny Junor, author of the 2014 biography Prince Harry : Brother, Soldier, Son, Mark is "one of the few people who talks some sense into [Prince Harry] at times".

It's believed that Marko is one of Archie's three godparents.

Tiggy

Harry and William's childhood nanny Alexandra Pettifer, better known as Tiggy Legge-Bourke, has remained close to the princes.

Tiggy was the boys' favourite nanny and Charles' personal assistant from 1993 to 1999, but Harry admitted in memoir Spare that his mother was not a fan of hers.

Writing in Spare, Harry claimed Princess Diana saw Tiggy as a rival and suspected she was being groomed to be her replacement.

The nanny had close relationships with the royal brothers, once referring to the pair as "my babies".

Harry also revealed that Tiggy was one of the loved ones who chastised him for doing the bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview in 2021.

While it's never been officially announced, it's been widely reported that Tiggy was chosen to be one of Achie's godparents.

David Foster

Music producer David Foster has often been referred to as Harry's 'other father'.

According to reports, David, who is a year younger than Prince Charles, has played a key role in Harry's life and helped Sussexes to find a home in Canada before they eventually moved to California and settled down.

His wife, musical star Katharine McPhee, also used to perform in school productions with Meghan, so there are a lot of connections.

Katharine, who attended a school called Immaculate Heart, starred in a couple of school musicals with Meghan but they were never 'close friends'.

However, after performing in Waitress the musical in London, she and husband David struck up a friendship with Harry and Meghan and have remained in contact ever since.

Katharine admitted the Duke and her husband have a special bond, telling Access Hollywood in 2020: "My husband has a really, really beautiful relationship with Harry. They're so cute. They're like father and son."

Elton John

One person who has supported Harry for decades is Sir Elton John - with the pair even going on holiday together.

Elton was close friends with Princess Diana and singing a special rendition of Candle in the Wind at her funeral in 1997.

The Rocket Man singer has remained close to both Diana's sons since her death, with the singer defending Harry and Meghan against "relentless and untrue assassinations on their characters" in 2019.

Elton and husband David Furnish are said to have a 'paternal and protective' friendship with the Duke of Sussex.

It was reported that the superstar "speaks to Harry and Meghan every day" and has "been a listening ear and support throughout".

In their Netflix docuseries, Meghan revealed Archie's favourite song is Bennie And The Jets, and Elton performed at their wedding reception in 2018.

The former Watford FC owner is mentioned a number of times in Harry's memoir Spare, with the duke revealing he asked Elton to sing Candle in the Wind for the anniversary of his mother's death.

But the Grammy Award winner refused, claiming it would be too "macabre" to celebrate Diana's life and achievements.

The most intriguing part came where Harry reveals details of a clash they had when he and Meghan visited the singer's holiday home in France.

Harry said he was congratulating Elton on finishing his memoir but the atmosphere soured when the Tiny Dancer singer revealed it was going to be serialised in the Daily Mail.

The Duke asked Elton why he had chosen the newspaper which had "made your life miserable", to which he replied that he wanted people to read it.

Despite their close bond and the multiple mentions, there is no word of thanks for Elton at the back of book Spare.

James Blunt

Harry has been friends with the 'You're Beautiful' singer for many years - with the pair serving in the Army together.

James performed at the 2016 Invictus Games after being personally invited by Harry via text message, which the singer revealed on Twitter.

He was also a guest at Harry's wedding to Meghan in 2018 along with his wife, Sofia.

Back in October 2019, James defended the couple, whose wedding he attended, during an appearance on Good Morning Britain.

"He's a very nice man, a really phenomenal soldier who does a lot of work for other people, for charities, for veterans, the Sentebale charity for children in Africa," said Blunt.

"I think under great scrutiny they seem to try a lot for other people. So the vitriol seems a bit like leaning on bullying to me."

James Corden

One of Harry's new pals in California has been James Corden.

The Gavin and Stacey star landed Harry's first sit-down interview since he moved to Motecito back in 2021, with the lads spending the afternoon together on an open top bus ride on The Late Late Show.

Last year, James revealed he is a "huge fan" of both the Sussexes, that he will "always be in their corner" and he has "nothing but admiration and respect" for the couple.

James' children have been for a play date at the couple's home, with the presenter stating that the families went out for dinner afterwards.

The presenter described Harry as a "devoted" husband and father, adding that he has shown bravery in his decision to step down from being a senior royal.

In a recent interview with The Sun, James would not be drawn on the current debate surrounding the Sussexes and said: "It's not fair."

He got a text message from Harry during the chat, and playfully told the interviewer: "Oh God, wouldn’t you just love to see these."
