A year 3 pupil threatened and chased a woman teacher with a knife at a school in Mueang district of Sakon Nakhon province.

A school caretaker intervened and persuaded the child to put down the weapon, bringing the situation under control without further escalation.

The incident occurred on Friday. The school's name was not released.

Sathan Waree, director of Sakon Nakhon Primary Education Service Area Office 1, visited the school on Sunday to establish the facts. Officials are also addressing the child's violent behaviour and providing support for those who were affected.

School officials said the safety of pupils and staff was being given the highest priority. Local community leaders and police had been invited to the school to discuss measures to prevent any recurrence. Police continued to monitor the situation closely.

Officials were visiting hospitals and local health facilities to ensure the errant pupil receives medical treatment and follows a prescribed care plan and that the child's condition and behavioural development is closely monitored.

During the visit, Mr Waree and his team reviewed the circumstances surrounding the incident and stressed the need for strict enforcement of school safety protocols. He said his office was working with child protection agencies, local authorities and partner organisations to assess the pupil's living conditions and family circumstances.

A welfare assessment report on Monday would help formulate an appropriate support plan for the child.

The pupil is now subject to continuous supervision and support and is receiving treatment and behavioural monitoring in line with medical advice.
