A statement released by the school said: "We are closed tomorrow in the interests of health and safety, due to; the hall roof being partially blown off, loose and unsafe flying debris.

"We are aiming to open on Thursday following checks by RCT. Further updates will be sent tomorrow.

"We would like to thank you for supporting us as always today."

Rhondda Cynon Taff council also said: "Please note, #Maerdy Community Primary School will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, January 15, due to a clear-up operation following storm damage.

"The school is likely to be reopened on Thursday. A further update will be issued in due course."

Storm Brendan  has blown through leaving trees down and homes without power.

The country has so far faced two days of gale-force winds and torrential rain, after Monday's storm also caused flooding on several roads and brought 79mph winds to the Mumbles.

Airlines were forced to divert flights scheduled to land at Gatwick as gales of up to 80mph caused disruption around the UK.

After plaguing parts of Ireland, causing thousands of homes and businesses to lose power, the storm brought high winds to parts of Wales on Monday afternoon.
