Primark, Aldi and M&S announce major changes to opening hours when lockdown ends

From December 2, non-essential shops in England will be allowed to reopen.

This means that brands like Primark and M&S (excluding foodhalls) will be permitted to open their doors to physical shoppers for the first time since November 5.

In order to provide shoppers with as much valuable Christmas shopping time as possible, some of the UK's most popular brands have taken the decision to extend their opening hours into the night.

M&S is opening shops until midnight, with Aldi ensuring supermarkets stay open until 11pm from December 21 to December 23, reports  Birmingham Live.

Waitrose said smaller stores will stay open until 11pm on December 21, 22 and 23, while larger branches will close at 10pm.

Primark, meanwhile, says it intends to operate longer when non-essential retail is allowed again.

A spokeswoman for Primark said: "Associated British Foods Plc are calling for extended trading hours for Primark stores once they re-open in December."

M&S today confirmed its longer hours will apply on December 21, 22 and 23 and applies to 400 of its stores - around two-thirds of its operation in England.

The branches which don't stay open until midnight will be open until 10pm.

Sacha Berendji, M&S’s Retail, operations and property director said: "We want our customers to be able to shop with confidence this Christmas, which means supporting social distancing in our stores and minimal queueing outside as the weather gets colder.

"To help with this, we’ll be operating our longest ever opening hours just before Christmas.

"Along with the wider industry, we continue to ask for Sunday trading hours to be extended to help us increase our capacity to serve everyone safely this festive season."
