Price of fish and chips rises to £12 as cost of living crisis bites

A portion of fish and chips now costs £12 in some areas of the UK thanks to the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Chip shop owners fear high prices will turn customers away leaving their businesses in tatters, Cornwall Live reports.

A report published by Saxo Markets today found 40 per cent of consumers have already stopped buying takeaways in a bid to tighten their belts.

Erin Morgan, who runs a chip shop in Ceredigion, explained to the BBC that she was having to take the hit and shoulder the rising costs - as she reluctant to have to put up her prices by 50 per cent.

She said: "It's worrying, the price of everything is going up. If we carry on seeing these price rises, we'll have to reassess how we run the business."

Just this week, she was forced to increased the price for a fish and chips meal from £7.40 to £7.90.

However, the BBC reports that other restaurants have had to up their prices by a whopping £12.

Gareth Morgan, who runs a chip shop in Cardigan, said: "You'd have a regular visit two or three times a week possibly, you see them now twice a month possibly."

National Federation of Fish Friers president, Andrew Crook, said: "I've seen the price of cooking oils more than double. That's due to the conflict in Ukraine. With fish, we're already seeing post-pandemic inflation. The cost of fuel also affects it.

"And we're expecting tariffs to be applied to Russian whitefish of 35 per cent, which will certainly impact our industry."

He added: "It's going to put a lot of businesses out of business."
