Prestwick Airport military exercise to last into the early hours of the morning this week

A military exercise will take over the skies at Prestwick Airport this week.

Up to eight helicopters, including Chinook, Merlin and Wildcat will take part in training that's set to last into the early hours of the morning between tonight and Thursday.

Bosses at the airport say that routing in and out of Prestwick has been planned to minimise disruption.

Air crew are required to undergo various night exercises to achieve all of the necessary training objectives.

A statement from the airport reads: "Please be aware that the airport will be hosting a military aviation exercise for up to 8 helicopters, including Chinook, Merlin and Wildcat; from July 18 until July 22.

"In order to meet all training objectives, the aircrew are required to achieve a number of night sorties, this will require flying through to the early hours Monday through to Thursday.

"Aircraft routing in and out of Glasgow Prestwick Airport has been planned to minimise disruption as far as possible and the continued support of the local community is very much appreciated during this essential training."
