Preseason Awards: Who sank, who swam and who stayed the same

The Philadelphia Eagles officially finalized their 53-man roster seconds before the deadline on Tuesday, August 29. Now, it’s time to look at which official Eagles sank, swam or stayed the same during preseason.

Who Sank: Marcus Mariota

I want to believe that Marcus Mariota was just not used to a slower pace of a preseason game, but we know that’s not the case. In his three preseason games with the Eagles, he had 17-for-30 completions for 165 yards and one touchdown. For someone of Mariota’s experience I find that to be very alarming in preseason. I truly hope Jalen Hurts doesn’t get hurt this season because he deserves a fully healthy season, but if he were to go down, I think Tanner McKee has an opportunity. I know McKee has less experience, but from preseason he doesn’t look too nervous.

Who Swam: Sydney Brown

Brown is one guy I was rooting for to make the team and I’m so excited to see him thrive in the NFL. During his preseason, he had 13 tackles and one assist. After his first game, he interviewed with the media, and I loved the energy he was providing about wanting to be on the team. Now he is, and I’m excited to see what he can do.

Who Stayed the Same: The Georgia Guys

I think Nolan Smith and Jalen Carter were phenomenal during preseason and will have an impact this season. I just wish I saw more from them during this preseason and see how they will fit with this team. I also think people were speaking awfully high on both Carter and Smith, and I agree with what they’ve said, but also think we need to see them in the regular season before we form any opinions. That being said, I’m very excited to see what all Georgia guys can do for the Eagles as the team faces some harsh offenses this season.
