Premier League's talent hotbeds as Liverpool ranks best in the UK

The sight of a homegrown player at a Premier League club is always a welcome one, with countless fanbases taking pride of having 'one of their own' among the ranks.

Liverpool fans took delight in their team winning the league with local lad Trent Alexander-Arnold playing a big part, while many from the east end of London have enjoyed the sight of Mark Noble wearing the captain's armband at West Ham United for a number of years.

When it comes to the cities making the biggest contribution to the Premier League, a new study has found there is a clear frontrunner, but less than half of the UK has a representative with minutes in the competition.

The 35 Premier League players provided by the city of Liverpool amount to 3% of all British players in the division - more than any other city in the UK.

That's according to the Football Hotbeds study from sports platform OLBG, which has looked into the birth towns and cities of the more than 1,000 British-born players to feature in the English top flight.

Merseyside as a whole has contributed 50 players, second only to Greater London (103) in the regional breakdown.

The research has looked at previous Premier League players as well as the current crop, finding that 44% of London-born players have been defenders.

As well as current England internationals Reece James and Luke Shaw, the long line of Premier League players born in one of the London boroughs include former London-based players Sol Campbell and John Terry.

When looking at cities, though, Liverpool leads the way in providing defenders and midfielders, with Alexander-Arnold, his Reds teammate Curtis Jones and Everton's Anthony Gordon among those currently active in the division.

The research has found Everton have fielded more Liverpool-born players than rivals Liverpool, while Manchester City and Manchester United have four each who were born in the city of Manchester.

Speaking of Manchester, the city's 28 Premier League players put it third on the all-time list, above Sheffield (23) and Nottingham (18) but below the 31 from Birmingham.

Birmingham is also responsible for nine strikers, more than any other city in the UK, with former Aston Villa frontman Gabby Agbonlahor among that number.

While just over 40% of UK towns and cities have been represented in the Premier League, that means more than half have not.

Some 4.5% of the British players in the history of the competition are playing this season, with all but two members of the most recent England national squad plying their trade in the Premier League.

The cities currently represented in the national team include London, Leeds and Sheffield, while goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is one of the 49 players born in County Durham to play Premier League football - Greater London and Merseyside remain the only areas with more.
