Premier League news sees Leicester's European aim, Antonio Conte's Covid wait and Werner's Real Madrid blow

Here at the latest Premier League headlines for Wednesday, April 13.

Leicester aim to upset the status quo

Kasper Schmeichel has urged Leicester to upset the establishment again when they face PSV Eindhoven in the Europa Conference League on Thursday. The Foxes head to Holland with the quarter-final tie finely poised after last week's 0-0 first-leg draw at the King Power Stadium, with a game against Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday.

It is Leicester's second European quarter-final after their 2-1 aggregate defeat to Atletico Madrid in the last eight of the Champions League five years ago. Schmeichel, who is one of seven players still at the club from 2016-17, has won the Premier League, FA Cup, Community Shield with the Foxes, having seen their remarkable rise after winning the Championship in 2014. And the Denmark goalkeeper wants unfavoured Leicester to continue to defy the odds.

He said: "We probably aren't the biggest, flashiest club about but we have consistently been able to mix it with the big boys and have done a good job of it so far. As a club we have grown incredibly. We are sitting in the best training ground in the country, we have been in European competitions, we have won trophies and we are constantly trying to fight on all fronts.

"That's where all the fun is. To have experiences like this, winning the FA Cup, winning the Community Shield, the Premier League - these are moments in history which we are fighting for every single day. It's really important a club like this keeps progressing and keeps that hunger and desire at every level, not just a football level."

Conte Covid test

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte is expected to take charge of Saturday's match against Brighton despite testing positive for Covid-19. Conte tested positive at the weekend and has been "appropriately distancing" to avoid spreading the virus, according to the Premier League side.

Tottenham expect the Italian to be symptom-free in time for Saturday's lunchtime kick-off at home to Brighton. Conte's pre-match press conference will now take place on Thursday via Zoom, rather than in-person at the club's Hotspur Way training ground in Enfield. Tottenham are currently fourth in the table following a run of four straight wins, the most recent a 4-0 victory at Aston Villa on Saturday.

Werner's Real agony

Timo Werner has admitted thinking his goal in the Bernabeu Stadium had floored Real Madrid in Tuesday's breathless Champions League quarter-final second leg. Chelsea prevailed 3-2 in Madrid but exited the competition 5-4 on aggregate after extra-time.

Werner struck midway through the second half to put Chelsea into a 3-0 lead, with the Blues shaking off Marcos Alonso's disallowed goal in style. Germany forward Werner's strike put Chelsea 4-3 ahead on aggregate, after Madrid had claimed a dominant 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge in the first leg.

Just when the Blues looked to close out a remarkable comeback victory however, Luka Modric conjured a majestic pass for Rodrygo's volley. Karim Benzema thumped in a header in extra-time and Chelsea's quest for a miracle in Madrid proved in vain, leaving the Blues to relinquish their Champions League title.

"When I celebrated I thought 'this is it'," Werner told Chelsea's official club website. "We could have scored before that to make it 3-0 but the officials didn't give it to us. It is a point you can talk about but when I scored I thought 'we are through with this'. We nearly gave no chances to Madrid but in the end we have to say the goals they scored were very good.

"To come back after a 3-1 defeat in the home game was very good for us, we had everything that we needed at 3-0 up, we had the chance to go through. There was one moment in regular time when we were not like we were the whole game and Madrid have the quality to score against you and they showed it for the 3-1. I think it was a brilliant goal, a brilliant cross from Modric, hard to defend."
