Premier League football substitution rules for 2020/21 as subs change from five to three

Five substitutions in Premier League matches will not be permitted in the new 2020/21 season.

The temporary rule had been brought in when top-flight football resumed post-lockdown in June, following the three-month hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The five substitutes rule was introduced to try and make it easier for the players, whose fitness levels may not have been as strong due to the stoppage in play.

Prior to that, each team was allowed to make three substitutes during the game. Games will now revert back to this rule for the new season.

Why will the five subs rule not be carried on?

Premier League clubs voted against continuing the rule at a meeting at the beginning of August.

The rule was heavily criticised, as many people believed it benefited the so-called "bigger" clubs, who have more options on the bench.

However, the rule was still available for teams to use - if they wished - with FIFA confirming the rule could be used in competitions up until August 2021.

But this was something all of the 20 Premier League clubs did not want, and they voted to return back to the orthodox three subs.

The number of players allowed on the bench will also return to seven when the season begins on September 12.

According to some research done by Sky Sports , Brighton & Hove Albion used the five substitute rule the most out of any team in the top-flight.

Burnley, however, were the side to use it the least, with manager Sean Dyche averaging just two changes per game.
