Premier League explain why VAR didn't award Everton a penalty for Dele Alli's handball or Richarlison incident

The Premier League have released their guidance on why Everton were not awarded a penalty after a Dele Alli handball incident against Spurs on Sunday.

In the 70th minute of the game, shortly after the visitors had taken the lead through the England international's strike, he challenged Yerry Mina for a cross inside his own box.

The ball appeared to strike the arm of the Tottenham man, and the game was stopped for over three minutes as VAR checked over the incident.

However, the decision was that Everton wouldn't be awarded a penalty and the match continued - with the Blues eventually scoring their equaliser deep into added time thanks to a Cenk Tosun header.

And the Premier League have now released the reason behind why the hosts weren't awarded a spot-kick for the incident.

The statement read: "The VAR considered that both Alli and Mina were challenging for the ball in the air and Alli was under pressure from the attacker as the ball struck his hand.

"In his view it was not a clear and obvious error."

The incident was one of multiple occasions VAR got involved in an eventful second half of Sunday evening's match, including one involving Davinson Sanchez and Richarlison.

That was also reviewed, and the Premier League confirmed the decision by the on-field referee not to award a penalty was not "a clear and obvious error".

The game was unfortunately also soured by an incident which led to a serious injury to Andre Gomes, who is set for surgery today on a fracture dislocation to his right ankle.

The Premier League also released the reason behind that decision, saying: "The red card, issued by the on-field referee, for Son was for endangering the safety of a player, which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge."
