Premier League explain astonishing red card as Everton end Manchester United's unbeaten record

The Premier League have issued a statement regarding Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye’s red card during Everton’s win over Manchester United on Monday night.

Gueye was sent off for striking his own teammate Michael Keane during the first half at Old Trafford.

The astonishing incident occurred in the 13th minute as the Everton pair were involved in an argument after the midfielder had given possession away which leading to Bruno Fernandes taking a shot which flashed just wind.

After a brief face to face, Keane shoved Gueye, who responded by raising his hand into the central defender's face.

All of which happened right in front of referee Tony Harrington who showed Gueye a red card - much to the surprise of many inside Old Trafford.

An incesed Gueye had to be restrained by Jordan Pickford and Iliman Ndiaye before heading down the tunnel for an early shower.

The Premier League match centre swiftly explained the decision of a red card by confirming Gueye was given his marching orders for violent conduct which means he faces a three-game suspension.

A statement on X, formerly Twitter, reads: "The referee's call of red card to Gueye for violent conduct was checked and confirmed by VAR — with the action deemed to be a clear strike to the face of Keane."

David Moyes and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall confirmed after the game that Gueye apologised for his actions that left his team-mates with a huge mountain to climb.

The incident took place with the score at 0-0 and despite being reduced to ten-men, Everton managed to secure a rare win at Old Trafford thanks to Dewsbury-Hall’s goal.

The Toffees move above rivals Liverpool in the table after ending Man Utd’s five-game unbeaten run.
