Premier League confirm why Everton penalty wasn't retaken after VAR check

The Premier League have confirmed why Everton's penalty at Manchester City was not ordered to be retaken by the video assistant referee.

Gylfi Sigurdsson saw his spot-kick saved by Ederson during the first-half at the Etihad today after Richarlison was brought down in the box after a foul by Ruben Dias, who was shown a yellow card.

Richarlison was the first player to follow up on the saved penalty but had his shot blocked and sent wide for a corner by Kyle Walker.

Did Michael Oliver and VAR get it wrong? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below

Television replays confirmed that a number of players had entered the box before Sigurdsson had taken the penalty leading to calls for it to be retaken.

But the ECHO has been told that VAR would only suggest to referee Michael Oliver that the spot-kick be retaken if any of the players who had made a "material difference" had encroached.

And so it was deemed that those players who entered the box before Sigurdsson struck the spot-kick did not end up having an influence on what happened next.
