Premier League clubs set to vote on rule change after Jurgen Klopp's plea

Jurgen Klopp has again reiterated his desire to have five subs reintroduced as the Premier League clubs prepared to vote on the matter.

Currently teams can only make three changes during a match, although five were previously permitted when football returned from the pandemic.

Some felt that five subs favoured big clubs as they were allowed to fully utilise the depth of their squads.

Now top flight outfits have been told to expect a vote at June's annual general meeting according to the Daily Mail.

Klopp has been a major advocate of allowing five subs, citing the amount of games played by teams battling on several fronts and the need to avoid injuries and rotate players.

This week he said: "We played Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday and Tuesday, that's a horrible schedule.

"If we can make changes, we will do that. If it's not, it's not. It's essential that we go again for the five subs."

Burnley boss Sean Dyche has been among those who would rather the substitutions be limited to three.

The Clarets have been in the Premier League since 2016, but have had to work on a hugely inferior budget and now face a realistic threat of relegation to the Championship.

Earlier this season Dyche claimed five clubs suits teams who can call on internationals right through their squad.

"The point I have made is that it is favourable to the big clubs who carry big squads of top players," he said.

"It helps keep the group they might have active and more settled. It is more advantageous to clubs with 25 international players compared to those with smaller groups such as ours."

Other major European leagues chose to stick with five subs when the Premier League reverted back to three.

One issue previously raised by some managers is when those in charge at the leading outfits opt against making three subs, but still call for five to be allowed.

PFA chief Maheta Molango supports an increase to five subs and doesn't think it offers an advantage to the bigger clubs.

"We are absolutely in favour of it. We have made this clear to the Premier League," he said.

"It should never have been a discussion about competitive advantage because it has nothing to do with competitive advantage - as studies show. This is purely a question of player welfare.

"When so many games need to be played we need to make sure the players get a chance to rest properly."
