Premier League clubs make decision on five substitutes' rule for 2020/21 season

Premier League clubs have voted against the adoption of the five substitutes rule for the 2020/21 season.

Football's international law-makers gave competitions the option of increasing the amount of substitutes teams could use towards the end of this season to protect player welfare on the sport's resumption amid packed fixture schedules.

The Premier League took up that option but the rule will not remain in place next term, while the size of matchday squads will also return to 18 down from 20.

All three promoted clubs from the Championship are believed to have voted to return to three substitutes and a bench of seven players rather than the nine permitted during Project Restart.

The Premier League is also expected to discuss with clubs how they would manage a similar situation in the future if a similar situation arises and a season can not be completed.

However, no formal vote is expected to take place on the issue of curtailment, rather a number of conversations will take place followed up with a full consultation of stakeholders will first take place.

"At the Premier League’s Annual General Meeting today, Shareholders agreed to rules relating to Video Assistant Referees (VAR) and substitute players for the 2020/21 season," a statement from the governing body read.

"Shareholders unanimously approved the implementation of VAR, in line with the full FIFA VAR protocol.

"Clubs also agreed to revert back to using up to three substitute players per match, with a maximum of seven substitutes on the bench."

The new top flight season is scheduled to start on the weekend of Saturday 12 September.
