Premier League announce transfer window dates as experiment scrapped

The Premier League has confirmed it will come back into line with other European leagues for the 2021 summer transfer window.

Clubs will be able to buy and sell players from June 9 to August 31, meaning the window will be open for 12 weeks.

For the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons, the transfer window closed on the eve of the Premier League season, with clubs arguing that shutting the window later made the start of the season more disruptive due to transfer speculation.

However, no other European league followed this system, which meant overseas clubs were still able to buy players from Premier League sides, who were subsequently unable to replace any departure.

As such, the Premier League opted to revert back in line with other European leagues from January 2020, but last year's disrupted Covid-19 transfer window means that 2021 will be the first summer window where the leagues are fully aligned once more.

It represents a boost to clubs such as Manchester United, who faced speculation over some player departures when they were unable to sign any replacements.

The June 9 opening will give clubs the chance to make signings prior to this summer's Euros, which begins on June 11.

With the 2021/22 Premier League season set to get underway on August 14, clubs will also have two-and-a-half weeks to make signings after the campaign begins.

Due to the Covid-19 shutdown delaying the end of the season, last year saw a much later transfer window.

The window opened on July 27, running until October 5, although the domestic window was open until October 16.

This latest announcement sees the transfer windows fall back in line with their more traditional periods of summer and January.
