Premier League agrees new Covid rules following outbreaks at numerous clubs

The Premier League have agreed that all players and staff must take a daily lateral flow test to enter their training facilities.

Clubs will also have players and staff taking a PCR test at least twice a week.

The action comes after it was confirmed on Monday there were a record 42 positive cases detected in the league within the seven days previous.

That is the highest figure since testing began in the 2019/20 season.

The most positive cases since then was back in August when 16 cases were recorded.

Massive outbreaks at Tottenham and Manchester United have caused the postponement of two league games within the space of three days.

Brighton, Leicester, Aston Villa and Norwich have confirmed cases also.

It is expected the measures will be implemented quickly, with additional mask wearing, limiting of physical treatment and social distancing also being advised to reduce the risk of further case.

Sports minister Nigel Huddleston believes the Covid Plan B measures set to come into force in England on Wednesday are “proportionate” but refused to rule out reducing capacities or even closing venues to spectators altogether in future.

Huddleston told the PA news on Tuesday: “What we are doing is focusing on the situation at the moment and that we’re carefully monitoring the situation.

“The Prime Minister said yesterday that we will have to deal with this Covid situation as the facts tell us, so I can’t rule anything out. But we need to deal with the situation as it is at the moment, and we believe the measures brought in place now are proportionate.”
