A man is on the run after allegedly threatening to kill a pregnant woman at a service station in Melbourne's south east.

Shruthi Sheshagiri was sitting inside an SUV with her husband and 5-year-old son when the unknown man approached the car at about 9.30pm on March 17.

Investigators say the man kicked and punched the passenger's side of the vehicle while threatening to kill Ms Sheshagiri if she didn't open the door.

"As soon (as) he saw me, that (I am) pregnant, he started becoming very furious and he started hitting the glass window," Ms Sheshagiri told Nine News.

Her husband Mahesh Sriramaiah said he heard the man say "I'll kill you, I'll kill the baby" as their young son screamed in the back seat of the car.

The family quickly drove off and the man then made his getaway on a motorbike.

He's described as having an athletic build and was wearing a leather jacket and jeans at the time.
