A mum who was shot and killed by her two-year-old son while 33 weeks pregnant has been pictured for the first time.
Laura Ilg, 31, called 911 just after 1pm on June 16. Her young son had accidentally got ahold of his father's handgun and shot her in the back at their home in Norwalk, Ohio.
According to police: "Several seconds [after Laura called 911], her husband, Alex Ilg, called 911 stating he received a phone call from his wife 'screaming something about my son and needing to call 911'."
Officers kicked down the front door where they found Laura still conscious with her toddler son in the main bedroom upstairs. She was "fully conscious" when police found her and "gave officers a complete account of the events that occurred."
Her son had reportedly gotten into the bedroom while she was doing laundry and began playing with the gun. It's said the gun belonged to the boy's father, who was at work at the time. Laura was immediately taken to hospital, where doctors carried out an emergency C-section.
Her unborn son did not survive, and Laura died from her gunshot wounds just hours later at around 5pm on June 16.
Chief David Smith said the house was full of safety features, including baby gates and child locks on drawers, but some seemed to have been left open. Authorities believe the incident happened after the toddler gained access to the master bedroom, which was usually locked, where the gun was kept in a nightstand.
As a search warrant was carried out at the home, police found an additional 12-round magazine inside the nightstand, a loaded 12-gauge shotgun in the closet and a Carbine AirSoft rifle in a computer room.
Police are looking into the "functionality" of the pistol and how a two-year-old could pull the trigger. Police have said that "no charges have been filed at this time and the case will be forwarded to the Huron County Prosecutor's Office."
Laura's obituary described her as an "avid reader" who "especially liked Harry Potter, crafting, and enjoyed board games and was a child at heart."
Born in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Laura is said to have enjoyed "attending her church and spending time with her family."
"She always wanted to be a mother and wife," according to her obituary. She met her husband, Alek, while he was in the Marines and the pair married in November 2018.
Following her death, her husband took to Facebook to share his devastation at the death of his wife and their unborn child. "If you haven't heard, Laura and our unborn son Talisen passed away Friday," he wrote.
"There are no words for the pain and loss I feel. She was, is, and always will be, the love of my life."
