Predatory seagulls are "preying on pedestrians" on Grafton Street in Dublin

Predatory seagulls are swooping down to steal food from pedestrians, a trader warned yesterday.

Shoppers and workers in Grafton Street, Dublin, have been bit by the aggressive “flying dogs”.

After Tom McEnaney saw one bird steal a sandwich, he tweeted: “There’s a predatory seagull perched outside Brown Thomas in Dublin and every few seconds it swoops down looking for a sandwich-eating victim.

“It has assaulted three people in the few minutes since I noticed it.”

Flower seller Catherine Claffey, who has been a trader on Grafton Street for more than 37 years, said: “They’re so clever, they come behind people minding their own business having their sandwich and next of all you see this seagull coming from behind and you can see what’s going to happen.

"But the person is totally unaware of what’s happening.

“At one stage a young lad was coming out of McDonald’s and they bit his lip, they were trying to get the burger.

“There was blood coming out of his mouth. It’s dreadful.”

Catherine said on average of 10 pedestrians on Grafton Street have their lunch nabbed by the seagulls.
