Poundland is selling a full Christmas dinner for £5 - but Asda and Aldi are cheaper

Budget retailer Poundland has started selling a full Christmas Turkey dinner for the first time and it costs just £5 per person.

This price of £25 in total covers a turkey main, including vegetables, gravy and pigs in blankets, for a family of five.

Its four-course meal option - which also includes a starter of prawns, Baileys profiteroles, cheese selection and crackers - comes in at £34.25, so £6.85 per head.

Poundland, which plans to have chilled and frozen foods at all its stores by the end of 2023, insists it has not compromised on quality despite the low price.

Its frozen turkeys – in store now for £15 - have been sourced from Autumn Foods, while other brands include Young’s, Baileys, and Aunt Bessie’s.

Poundland commercial director Tim Bettley said: “This is no cracker joke – for the first time we’re making sure millions of our shoppers can buy their Christmas dinner at Poundland.

“Hundreds of our stores now have chilled and frozen food with stores now also offering fresh fruit and vegetables.

"And in more and more places across the UK, we’re offering an alternative to the big supermarkets, whether it's for everyday meals or the special ones like Christmas Day.”

However, the "big supermarkets" are in fact offering some bargain deals themselves.

Aldi is offering a Christmas dinner for £23.48, which includes turkey, potatoes, vegetables, gravy and pigs and blankets.

They say this amount feeds a family of six, which would work out around £3.91 per person.

Asda is selling a Christmas dinner deal that costs £4.40 per head - £22 for a family of five.

For Asda Rewards App users, a further £1.50 can be saved if they spend £20 on selected frozen Christmas dinner essentials.

Tesco, meanwhile, has introduced their budget festive feast - complete with a turkey crown, roast potatoes and all the trimmings - for £25 for a family of five.

This also works out at around £5 per person.

Richard Lim, CEO of Retail Economics says: “The grocers are working tirelessly to convey value in the communication they have with their core customers.

“This is an intelligent position of a proposition that strikes at the heart of the festive season and what’s important to consumers.”

“The retailer where people decide to do their main shop for Christmas dinner comes attached with lots of other supplementary purchases that go around that, so this offer is a really important tactic to secure market share.”
