Posters warning about dog thieves operating in the capital have appeared in Edinburgh parks

Posters warning owners about "dog thieves" have appeared in Edinburgh parks.

The poster warns that "dog thieves are operating in this area" and urges owners to "stay alert" when walking their dogs.

A photo of the poster was shared to Facebook by Whisker Wagon Mobile Pet Grooming.

They Edinburgh-based grooming company wrote: "It's been in the paper recently and posters around our parks. Please be extra vigilant when out walking. Keep yourself and your dog safe."

Adding a warning about "Dalmeny Park, Victoria Park, Montgomery Park and Leith Links", in particular.

The posters appear to have been put up by The Scottish Dog Walking Awareness Project, a group which was set up on Facebook this month.

The project aims to highlight the issue of dog theft in Scotland and say local parks are just one of the places that are being targeted.

A statement from the group reads:

"I'm hoping to help this issue get the attention it desperately needs by encouraging safety awareness by speaking to owners in parks, finding out if Edinburgh Council is prepared to put up notices in parks to help highlight dog theft."

Last month, pet owners in Leith were warned after two men in a white van were spotted acting suspiciously, taking photos in the park "to steal dogs".

Another owner reported a similar incidence, saying she was left feeling "something was really wrong" when two men rolled down the window of their van and began taking photos of her dog.

And earlier this year a dog was snatched while on a walk with her owner in Newhaven in an "appalling attack". Despite a police appeal the dog was never found.
