Post Office confirm talks underway to reopen local East Kilbride branch

The Post Office have confirmed talks are underway to reinstate a service in St Leonards.

It comes after the branch pulled down the hatches last month when RS McColl's, where it was based, shut up shop.

Local councillors and residents branded the closure a “major blow” for the area as the branch was well-used.

One resident told the News that older customers like herself would struggle to make it in to the town centre or other branches elsewhere.

The Post Office advertised for a new operator to take over the service and it now seems that there has been interest from an unnamed party.

This follows the news that Westwood Post Office has been given a reprieve, with the SPAR store deciding not to pull out of running the service.

It had initially said it would give up the franchise this month but has since made a U-turn.

The closure of St Leonards Post Office saw Independent Councillor Jim Wardhaugh, as well as Labour Councillors Joe Fagan and Graham Scott, back calls from local residents for a new operator in the area.

The councillors wrote to Post Office management and had suggested a nearby Tesco as a possible operator or using an “under-utilised” SLC property nearby.

East Kilbride MSP Linda Fabiani also said she had been liaising with the Post Office to find a resolution.

Councillor Wardhaugh said: “I am delighted by this latest news. A Post Office service in the area is essential and vital to the local community.”

Meanwhile, Councillor Fagan added: “This is really encouraging news and I hope that talks with a prospective operator lead to a solution.

“There is no doubt that the community value the Post Office in St Leonards and they want to keep the services provided there local.

“When Councillor Scott and myself approached Post Office Ltd they were keen to stress that they wanted a presence to remain in St Leonards.

“The issue was always finding an operator who could sustain a business there.

“I know that I speak on behalf of the whole community when I say that we hope a solution is forthcoming and that the future of St Leonards Post Office can be secured.”

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We have had interest in taking on St Leonards Post Office. Talks are at a very early stage.”
