Post-mortem law piles more heartache on grieving families and has to be changed

It is impossible to imagine the heartbreak caused when a loved one is murdered or killed.

To lose a relative, particularly one of your children, in such circumstances is beyond comprehension.

Authorities should do everything within their power to ease the suffering of bereaved family members.

The fact that a second post-mortem can be ordered more than 100 days after the death is unnecessary and cruel.

SNP MSP Gil Paterson’s Bill recognises a defence team may need their own examination but sets strict time limits on it.

He introduced the Bill following the delays experienced by the family of teenager Paige Doherty, who was murdered in 2016.

MSPs should embrace this call for change and get the Paterson Bill on the statute books as soon as possible.
