Portobello High School drama as 'threatening message' sparks major police response

Police raced to Portobello High School this morning after a "threatening message" was sent in.

Officers dashed to the school, which is one of the largest in Edinburgh, after a threat was made shortly after 10.15am on Thursday. Pupils weren't evacuated from the school, and were kept inside at all times. Police vehicles and officers with sniffer dogs were seen in the area.

Although police say there is currently not believed to be any risk to the public or school community, they are continuing to communicate with staff at the school.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a threatening message received at Portobello High School in Edinburgh shortly after 10.15am on Thursday, 19 November.

A City of Edinburgh Council spokesperson said: “Police were called to the school this morning after a threatening message was received. They established that there is not believed to be any risk to the public or school community and we will continue to liaise with them as their enquiries continue. Praise must go to the pupils and staff for their calmness during the incident and they were all a credit to the school.”
