Porsche Just Built Its Millionth Macan

It took Porsche 54 years for Porsche build one million 911s; for the Macan, it took just 12. Last week, Porsche built its millionth Macan, a Frozen Blue Metallic Macan 4 Electric, which it delivered to a customer in Germany.

Porsche began Macan production in its Leipzig, Germany, plant in late 2013, with deliveries beginning a few months later. Very quickly, it became Porsche's best-selling car, only occasionally being outsold by the larger Cayenne. The Macan is also the quickest Porsche to hit the seven-figure mark, as the Cayenne took 18 years to get to a million units.

The original gas-powered Macan is still in production in certain markets, including the US, having received two facelifts across its 11 years in production. Eventually, Porsche will end ICE Macan production in favor of the new, electric model, though the company hasn't confirmed a date for when this will happen. The Macan Electric entered production last year and already accounts for 60 percent of global Macan sales, though that's possibly because Porsche no longer sells the ICE model in the EU.

While one million Macans is undoubtedly impressive, it's also a fun reminder that Porsche is fairly small among established automakers. The company is well known globally, sure, but Toyota sold over 10 million cars across the globe just last year, by comparison.

For as important and profitable as Porsche is, it's still a very small player in terms of total volume. Out of every single model it's ever produced in its over 75 years, the Macan is, after all, just the third to hit one million.
