A popular fair which attracts more than 40,000 people each year is expected to be cancelled for the first time in more than 70 years.
Erewash Borough Council has announced plans to cancel a series of events including the popular Ilkeston Charter Fair, which would have taken place in October.
It comes as an extraordinary meeting of the council next week is recommended to cancel a number of planned events in the coming months, in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
The meeting, on August 27, will assess a report which confirms major events across the borough should be cancelled in the interests of public safety.
The report recommends that the council should follow safety advice on mass gatherings and the "red risk" they pose to the spread of the virus.
And if the report's recommendations are approved, the 768th Ilkeston Charter Fair will not take place this year - thought to be the first time the street fair will not go ahead since wartime.
The Erewash Bonfire and Fireworks Display, at West Park in Long Eaton, is also to be rubber-stamped for cancellation, as well as Long Eaton's Chestnut Fair, the Christmas light switch on in both towns, and the Christmas Eve carol service in Ilkeston.
Councillor Mike Wallis, lead member for culture and leisure on the council, said: “These are extremely difficult decisions but the safety of all has to be our number one priority.
"I can assure residents that the cancellation of events is not taken lightly but the media release recommendation and advice is absolutely clear and agreed by everyone involved – that the safety of the public would be at risk.
"So while it is disappointing, I am sure that everyone will understand the reasons.
"It has been an unprecedented year, but we look to 2021 with optimism and hope that we will be able to welcome back this borough’s historic Charter Fair and our many other events."
The council says it still expects the Remembrance Sunday wreath-laying events in both Ilkeston and Long Eaton to go ahead on November 8, with restrictions on attendance.
