Popular IKEA product sold in Ireland recalled over ‘head injury, cuts and lacerations’ risk

A popular mirror sold in IKEA stores throughout Ireland has been urgently recalled over injury fears.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission issued a recall notice for certain IKEA LETTAN mirrors on Thursday.

It said they pose a risk of “falling from the wall” which could result in “head injury, cuts and laceration hazards”.

Over 8,000 of the affected mirrors have been sold in Ireland since February 2021.

The recall notice reads: “A safety issue has been identified with certain IKEA LETTAN mirrors.

“The product presents a risk of injury. Incorrect material was used in the manufacturing of some wall fittings. The fittings that attach the product to the wall can break. This leads to the product falling from the wall and a person in the vicinity when the mirror falls can be hit by the mirror, posing head injury, cuts and laceration hazards.”

The affected mirror has date stamps before and including 2105. The date stamp is located at the back of the mirror. The affected product was available for purchase from February 2021.

Anyone who has an affected mirror at home should stop using it immediately and contact IKEA to order the replacement wall fittings free of charge.

A CCPC spokesperson said: “Proof of purchase is not required. To order the replacement wall fittings free of charge, to obtain the mirror fitting replacement instructions, for affected article numbers or for further information regarding this recall please visit the IKEA web site at https://www.ikea.com/ie/en/customer-service/product-support/recalls/lettan-mirror-pub9537a970 or call IKEA Customer Services on 01 541 3302.”

A spokesperson for IKEA said: “IKEA asks customers who have purchased a LETTAN mirror with date stamps before and including 2105 (yyww), to stop using it and contact IKEA to order wall fittings free of charge.

“IKEA has received reports of the mirrors falling due to the wall fittings breaking, therefore posing the risk of injury. As such, we are issuing a recall for repair for the affected date stamps. “Customers are kindly asked to carefully check the stamp dates on the back of their LETTAN mirrors following the instructions below and order wall fittings free of charge if affected.

“Customers can also contact IKEA on 01 541 3302. Proof of purchase (receipt) is not required. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. “
