Popular Glasgow bookshop to close as trade 'just too uncertain'

A popular independent Glasgow bookshop has announced it will close its doors for the final time next week.

Outwith Books in the south side of the city confirmed its final event will take place on Tuesday. Owners pointed to trade uncertainty as the reason for the closure.

In a social media post, the Albert Road shop thanked all its customers for supporting them, saying running the store "has been a dream".

Outwith Book's online shop at bookshop.org will be open until the end of September, and the business has encouraged people to continue purchasing there.

A statement online read: "I'm sorry to say it's gone midnight at this little bookshop. We are now closed, and our event on Tuesday night will be the last. . Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us to make it this far. Sadly, trade at the moment is just too uncertain to take us any further.

"This has been a dream, even with a pandemic thrown in. I’ll really miss the stories, chats and magical evenings at the shop. Leonard says thanks to everyone who gave him hugs. Our Bookshop.org shop will be open until the end of the month, and any sales will help us.

"Any orders already placed in the Albert Road shop will be dispatched by the end of the month. If you have vouchers to spend, please send me a message to arrange. . Thank you for an amazing three years."
